A Durango man accused of drawing a swastika on a construction project at Three Springs subdivision this summer was sentenced Tuesday to a year of probation, 40 hours of community service and was ordered to pay court fees and restitution.

In May, the Durango Police Department responded to a report of three homes vandalized in Three Springs, finding graffiti that included an image of a swastika, the words “crip” and “gang bang,” as well as “markings of a sexual nature,” according to arresting documents.
Officers also found evidence of drywall slabs that were screwed together and a stereo that was damaged.
Surveillance cameras captured a man identified as River Anderson, then 18 years old, near the area. A few days later, Anderson turned himself in to police.
Sixth Judicial District Attorney Christian Champagne said a criminal trespassing charge was dropped.
Anderson pleaded guilty to criminal mischief. During the length of his probation, he must abstain from alcohol and drugs. He also must pay $933 and restitution to the property owners, the amount of which will be determined at a later date.
