Kroeker’s band will perform that night, along with Simone Sanchez and The Machine, for “Females Take the Lead,” put on by SouthWest Colorado Concerts. The show will take place at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
“We’re going to have a good time,” Kroeker said. “We’re going to go out and do our thing. It’s going to be a wonderful, diverse evening.”
Four-member Sweetwater Station features Kroeker, along with Chris Rasmussan, Paul Berkowitz and Raymond Rose. The band’s music features harmonies from its two female vocalists, Kroeker and Rasmussan, as well as lead mandolin playing. Kroeker said the band plays familiar and original tunes from various styles, including folk, jazz, blues and country. The band covers songs by artists such as Sheryl Crow, Hillary Reynolds and Norah Jones, she said.
The Machine’s lineup at the concert will feature eight players, including three horns and a percussionist, Sanchez said. The band plays a variety of swing, blues and Latin styles, but most of the selections are dance tunes, she said.
“We’re a variety band,” Sanchez said. “We’re very versatile.”
The Machine’s set includes covers exclusively, for now, Sanchez said. The March 24 concert also will feature a young student performing a song from “The Jungle Book,” originally sung by Louis Prima.
The two featured bands are not only fronted by women, but also are made up of local musicians. Kroeker said it’s special to be recognized as a part of both those groups.
“Delighted and honored — those are two words I’d use right away,” she said. “We are thrilled.”
Sanchez said there is a wealth of talented local musicians from Cortez, Dolores and Mancos. She said it’s great that SouthWest Colorado Concerts is recognizing those people.
“I love that they’re taking the time to feature what we have here,” Sanchez said. “I’m super excited that the concert is featuring women. That’s unique, too.”
