If the Dove Creek Bulldogs girls basketball team is going to make waves this season, protecting the home court will be critical.
Thus, while it is still early in the season, the Bulldogs have to feel good about a 46-26 victory in their home opener versus Montezuma-Cortez High School junior varsity on Dec. 5.
Starting with intense defense and efficient offense, the Bulldogs raced to a 10-2 first-quarter lead.
By half, the Bulldogs’ lead had expanded to 23-7 and after the third quarter, the score stood at 36-13.
Sitting many of their starters in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs relinquished 13 points to a scrappy M-CHS team in route to a comfortable 46-26 victory.
Bulldog senior Madison Young dominated inside, shooting 7-for-11 for a game-high 14 points and pulling down six rebounds.
In addition to Young’s impressive performance, junior Ana Lee scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, senior Jessica Guynes had eight points, three rebounds and three assists, and senior Jennifer Fury contributed a game- high 10 rebounds.
With their record at 2-0 after a season-opening victory over Monticello, the Bulldogs return on Dec. 9 at home against Mancos.
