I’m just one aging oldster, confined in my home thinking back “in my day.”
Don’t yo love that line? Can’t help it. I went from 8 to 12 years old during the “War to end all wars” and I vividly remember how everybody (and companies) gave themselves to the war effort. Whatever was need was supplied!
It was remarkable, steel mills worked 24/7 turning out sections of ships being built on the East Coast. Landing mats were designed to be spread across the beaches of those jungle islands so planes could land and support our troops.
At home, women went into the factories and wives with kids rolled bandages and supported neighbors who hung gold stars in the window. I repeat, what was needed was delivered!
Supplies were delivered to wherever the battle was hottest. Our government was united – nobody thought states, they thought country.
Imagine sending a soldier up on a beach or into a jungle with only a pocketful of bullets. If we had had this leadership, and this government, in 1942, it’s doubtful, but possible, we’d all be speaking Japanese today;
