Montezuma County Meals on Wheels service doubles in wake of COVID-19

Frozen dinners supplement hot meals

Vicki Cunduff packs meals for delivery for Cortez’s Meals on Wheels program, which runs out of the Cortez Senior Center. The program provides hot meals for elderly and disabled residents who can no longer cook for themselves. Numbers have almost doubled for delivered meals after Cortez Senior Center was forced to stop its daily on-site meals because of COVID-19 restrictions banning large social gatherings.
Delivery driver Tammy Quinonez picks up her meals, which are kept warm in an insulated container, Monday’s route. Meals on Wheels out of the Cortez Senior Center is now delivering up to 76 meals a day, almost double the number delivered before the COVID-19 pandemic.
A chicken-broccoli stir fry with fried rice, chocolate pudding and a homemade roll was on the menu on Monday for the Meals on Wheels program run out of the Cortez Senior Center.
