Demons win on 2 pins and 8 forfeits

DHS wrestling celebrates alumni in a victory over Montezuma-Cortez
Seager Oliver of Montezuma-Cortez proved why he’s the No. 1 wrestler in Class 4A at 170 pounds against Patrick Cunnion of Durango on Tuesday at DHS. Oliver stepped up a weight class and defeated the 182-pound Cunnion 10-0. “It lets Patrick realize where he can be in the future,” Demons’ wrestling head coach John Gurule said.
Cole Gustavson couldn’t escape Levi Gross’s pin Tuesday at DHS. The Demons won the dual 60-16, but Montezuma-Cortez won three of the five matches that actually hit the mat, taking two by way of pins.
Daniel Gustavson gave up almost 30 pounds to Victor Perez when the two met Tuesday, but he still found a way to win. Gustavson wrestled up to the 285-pound weight class and pinned Perez 23 seconds into the second period. “I had to get in there and dictate the pace of the match, be quicker and more explosive,” Gustavson said.
Justice Ramos of Montezuma-Cortez started Tuesday’s dual off with a pin of Durango’s Diego Martinez. The Panthers went on to lose the match 60-16 after forfeiting eight weight classes. DHS next will wrestle at the Payson Invitational on Saturday in Payson, Ariz.
Hunter Hall beguiled Montezuma-Cortez’s Josh Ramos for the length of their 126-pound bout Tuesday. He led 15-4 after two periods before pinning Ramos with 15 seconds on the clock. “The crowd got me going,” Hall said. “I knew from the start that I had the guy beat.”
