Halfway through the third year of an already stellar prep athletic career, Montezuma-Cortez High School junior Randy Haley continues to make a name for himself on and off the field.
Breakout basketball season
Currently starting at forward for the Panthers’ basketball team, Haley is enjoying an outstanding season, ranking among the Panthers leaders in rebounding and scoring.
Especially impressive during the Panthers’ Southwest League opener against Fruita Monument on Jan. 17, Haley scored a career high 24-points, while pulling down nearly every rebound within his reach.
“I put in a little bit more work in the offseason and I matured a bit,” said Haley, discussing his breakout year.
All-conference football performer
More than just a basketball player, Haley was nothing short of spectacular on the football field this fall.
After leading the Panthers in rushing yards (898), rushing touchdowns (11) and total tackles (93), Haley was named to the first-team all-conference team as a linebacker and running back.
Already looking forward to next football season, Haley discussed what he hopes will be an exciting furture for his team.
“We’re going down to 2A and we’re bringing back a lot of guys,” said Haley. “Hopefully we can build on what we did last year.”
High hopes for spring sports
Following the conclusion of the basketball season, Haley will begin practicing for a spring athletic slate that includes participation in baseball and track.
On the diamond, Haley will man the outfield and on the track track, the four-sport athlete will run sprints and jump.
“I think we’ll do well,” said Haley, discussing the baseball team’s prospects. “I’m pretty excited, we have a lot of juniors.”
More than just an athlete
Equally as impressive as Haley’s athletic accomplishments has been the junior’s ability to perform in the classroom where he carries a 3.9 GPA.
A standout English student who admits that math is his favorite subject, Haley plans to attend college following graduation and is hopeful that he may one day earn an athletic scholarship.
Prior to leaving Cortez, Haley plans to continue setting an outstanding example of what it means to be a student athlete.
