Local GOP prepares for Nov. election

Caucus is official launch of election process

Montezuma County Republicans are gearing up for November's caucuses.

At a Montezuma County Republican Women's Club luncheon last week, caucus precinct co-chairman Chuck Lurvey announced that the local caucus process would start March 4 at 7 p.m. Montezuma County Republicans will hold 11 caucus precincts.

"The caucus is the start of the election process," Lurvey said. "It allows friends and neighbors to come together to discuss the issues and vote on which candidates will be placed on the ballot."

Lurvey explained that Republican candidates wishing to be included on the ballot must obtain 30 percent of the precinct vote. Those who don't make the cut can still petition to be placed on the ballot, he added.

A Montezuma County general assembly meeting on March 21 at the Montezuma County Annex Building follows the caucus precincts. At that time, 28 Montezuma County delegates will be selected to attend the Republicans' state assembly in April.

Only registered Republicans are allowed to attend precinct caucus meetings. No one is allowed into the precincts after 7 p.m.

Montezuma County Republican precinct locations include:

Precinct 1: Kingdom Truth Fellowship Church, Highway 491.

Precinct 2: Ponderosa Restaurant, Dolores.

Precinct 3: Arriola Community Center, County Road S.

Precinct 4: First United Methodist Church, Cortez.

Precinct 5: Cortez Elks Club, Highway 145.

Precinct 6: Towaoc Community Center, Towaoc.

Precinct 7: First Assembly of God, Cortez.

Precinct 8: Church of Christ, Cortez.

Precinct 9: Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church, Cortez.

Precinct 10: Lifeway Baptist Church, Highway 145.

Precinct 11: Mancos Community Center, Mancos.

Prior to the caucuses, Montezuma County Republicans will host a candidate meet-and-greet on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at First National Bank in Cortez. The meeting is open to the public.

Special district deadlines

Seven area special districts will elect board members on May 6. The deadline to file as a candidate is Feb. 28.
Open posts and terms include:
Cortez Sanitation District, three directors to serve four-year terms.
Mancos Fire Protection District, two directors to serve four-year terms.
Dolores Fire Protection District, two directors to serve four-year terms.
Southwest TV Translator Association, three directors to serve four-year terms.
Lewis-Arriola Fire Protection District, two directors to serve four-year terms and two directors to serve two-year terms.
Montezuma County Hospital District, three directors to serve four-year terms and three directors to serve two-year terms.
Dolores Conservation District, four directors to serve four-year terms.
Self-nominations
Candidate hopefuls to the Cortez Sanitation District, Mancos Fire Protection District, Dolores Fire Protection District, Southwest Colorado Television Translator and Lewis-Arriola Fire Protection District Association should file self-nomination forms with Luann Meyer, the designated election official for the five districts. Candidates wishing to fill vacancies on the Montezuma County Hospital District must file self-nomination forms with election official Kelly McCabe at 22 E. Main St. He can be reached at (970) 565-7209.
Candidates hoping to fill posts with the Dolores Conservation District must file self-nomination forms with Steve Miles at 628 W. 5th St. He can be reached at (970) 565-9045.
All self-nomination forms must be filed by 5 p.m. Friday. Feb. 28.
