Girl Scouts of Southwestern Colorado recently braved the biggest snowstorm of the winter and had a chance to participate with local government officials who hosted a mock trial for them under the direction of District Court Judge Todd Plewe.
The Girl Scouts learned about how each legal profession helps others in the community, what each of the speakers enjoyed about their jobs, and what kind of skills and education are needed to complete their job.
Girl Scouts were led through a mock trial of the theft of an iPod. They assumed roles of an actual trial - judge, reporting police officer, defendant, plaintiff, court clerk, attorneys and jury.
After the mock trial ended with a hung jury, the Girl Scouts were thrilled to be able to put on the Judge's robe and hold the gavel at the bench for pictures.
The Girl Scouts were assisted by Plewe, guest speakers Jen Lodge of the Cortez Police Department, magistrate and attorney Rachel Muhonen, and Tamara Osborne of Cortez emergency dispatch services.
