On Thursday, regional qualifiers from Mancos competed against 218 projects at the San Juan Regional Science Fair with students from Pagosa Springs, Bayfield, Ignacio, Durango, Silverton, Dolores, Cortez and Dove Creek.
In the special awards categories, Zoe Patana won the BP Making a Difference Award, Maya Powell won the DeneCor Construction Award, Jake McKie and Zoe Culpepper won awards from Empire Electric, Sarah Skinner won an award from JCP Corp, Sarah Skinner and Jessalyn Bay-Voit won awards from Native Executive Services, Caleb Yoder won the Math Contest, Ashley Cole won the Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center Award, and Ashley Cole won the Technical Writing Contest.
For divisional projects: Mattie Dominguez was third, and Brayden Blevins was Honorable Mention in Sixth Grade Animal Sciences, Maya Powell was second in Sixth Grade Earth and Space Sciences, Zoe Culpepper was first and David Messier was third in Sixth Grade Energy and Transportation, Colt Spencer was Honorable Mention in the Sixth Grade Environmental Sciences, Daniel San Miguel was second and Alex Fleitz was Honorable Mention in Junior Chemistry, Emily Cole was Honorable Mention in Junior Engineering, Jake Skinner was Honorable Mention and Ashley Cole was second in Junior Medicine and Health, Zane Wilson was first in Junior Microbiology, and Zoe Patana was second in Junior Physics.
Qualifying for the State Science Fair was Zoe Patana with Daniel San Miguel as a second alternate. Overall, Mancos students won more than $800 in cash and prizes.
