Homes were temporarily evacuated Thursday afternoon in north Durango for a gas leak, according to Durango Fire Protection District.
Chief Hal Doughty said the gas leak was discovered Thursday afternoon in the 3300 block of East Fifth Avenue on an Atmos Energy line. About four to six homes in the area were evacuated.
“Anytime you have a situation where you can’t immediately control the gas leak issue,” it’s necessary to move people out of the area, Doughty said.
Doughty said crews had better luck than expected and were able to quickly isolate the leak and shut the system down. Residents were then able to return to their homes later that afternoon.
“Everything is good to go,” he said.
Doughty said Atmos Energy crews would likely to remain on scene Thursday evening, but fire crews left as of 5 p.m.
