May is Archaeology Month in Colorado, and we invite you to join us as we "Celebrate our Song," showcasing an exquisite array of Native American storytelling, artistry, craftsmanship and talent.
The Indian Art and Culture Festival will be held May 24 and 25.
The 14th Annual Indian Arts and Culture Festival is a unique opportunity to experience the rich archaeological legacy left behind by the ancestral Puebloans and the artistic expression of their present-day ancestors.
Traditional Native American Dances will be held both Saturday and Sunday in the Cortez Cultural Center Plaza at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Indian Art Market displays the exquisite work of traditional pottery, sculpture, clothing, musical instruments, textiles, weaving, beadwork, jewelry, baskets, fetishes, kachinas, paintings, drawings, and photography by Native American Artisans. The Indian Art Market is Saturday, May 24, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 25. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and the Navajo rug auction will be 1 to 3 p.m., with a preview at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Halwood at the Cortez Cultural Center
The Benson Halwood exhibit planned for May 12- May 31, opening reception May 23, 2014, 5 to 7 p.m. The public is welcome. Watercolor is the principal media for this young artist. He plans on working with acrylics or oils once he is well established in the art world with his watercolors. He has two distinct styles; both are highly individual. Most often encountered is a presentation of a people-environment theme
'Beyond The Pavement'
Lillian Siefer's art will be shown at Olio from May 10 through July 19th with an artist's reception on May 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. As usual, you can acquire a good glass of wine to accompany your art-gazing.
Chinese art and chow
Dolores artist, Bronwyn Strickland will demonstrate Chinese characters in art Thursday, May 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Join her for an art demonstration and interactive session at Mancos Public Library. Chinese food donated by the Hunan Restaurant and refreshments will be provided. This is a free event. All ages are welcome.
Learn about Bronwyn's artistic process, discover the way Chinese words can enhance art, and create your own masterpiece! Strickland's paintings are currently displayed on the library Art Wall through May 6. Bronwyn Strickland received a B.A. in Chinese at Arizona State University in 2010.
