Mancos artist and sculptor Veryl Goodnight has loaded up and transported almost all of her bronze sculptures 43 of them to take to the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Okla. She will display them in a special 40-year retrospective of her art that will run from April 15 through July 10.
This is a huge honor for me, Goodnight said. The Gilcrease is a very major museum.
The Gilcrease Museum chooses one sculptor and one painter each year to display their art. Curt Walters, from Sedona, Ariz., is the painter who will be showing his 40-year retrospective at the same time as Goodnight.
He does beautiful landscape paintings, Goodnight said.
Many of her bronze sculptures go back to the 1970s, she said. The oldest piece is from 1979.
Then, after that show is over, the pieces are all coming back to Mancos to be in a mini version of the retrospective at the Goodnight Trail Gallery of Western Art, beginning Aug. 12.
Coinciding with the show is Goodnights book, No Turning Back: The Art of Veryl Goodnight. The 216-page book has 241 images and will be in the Mancos gallery on May 1.
The last part of the book is more about showing off my backyard, Goodnight said. I love Mancos, and I wanted to let everyone know that.
Walters will have a book chronicling his art to coincide with his display.
Dimitry (Domani) has been with me for 23 years. He has done the finishing on every bronze in the exhibit except for two of them. So its his show, too, Goodnight said.
Were all very excited.
