For the past five years, the members of the Sleeping Ute Mountain Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution have marked the graves of veterans in rural cemeteries in Montezuma County before Memorial Day weekend.
The flags used are the small flags and may remain at the gravesite after Memorial Day. Members ask your help in locating these veterans in the various rural cemeteries. If your loved one does not have a veteran’s marker, we ask you to call one of the following women before May 18 and give them the information.
Each year, about 15 members of the DAR spend time honoring veterans gravesites by placing about 300 flags in the rural cemeteries. The DAR will make every effort to place the flag on the requested grave. Plans are to place the flags in the different cemeteries the week of May 18. Because of the number of flags requested and the location of the cemeteries, we have listed the dates we plan to place the flags in the various cemeteries:
Lewis, Arriola, Sylvan, Goodman Point, and Fairview: Call Daisy Mahaffey, 970-739-0627.
This group will place flags May 19-21.
Battle Rock, Baskett, Lamb, Majors and other cemeteries in McElmo Canyon: Call Halene West 565-3279 or Janice Benton (970) 564-0737. Flags will be placed in the cemeteries on Sunday, May 18.
Cemeteries in Mancos area: Call Helen Small 565-8149. Flags will be placed Saturday, May 24.

Special requests for flags in other cemeteries: Call June Head 970-565-3880 or Daisy Mahaffey 970-739-0627 before May 20.
