The dusting of snow

Center documents alarming trend in early snowmelt
Chris Landry, director of the Silverton-based Center for Snow & Avalanche Studies, hands a snow sample for weight measuring to field assistant Andrew Temple. Several layers of dust are apparent near the top of the snowpit.
Chris Landry, under an impressive array of measuring devices, uses binoculars to read a snowstake on the perimeter of the Swamp Angel snow plot. The site in Senator Beck Basin, not far from Red Mountain Pass, is one of 11 around the state monitored by the Center for Snow & Avalanche Studies, which Landry directs from his Silverton office.
Measurements from a fresh snowpit are noted in a logbook. The Center for Snow & Avalanche Studies will continue to monitor the site until all the snow has melted.
