Dolores is shining bright for the holiday season, with a decorated town and events planned.
The giant spruce tree and Galloping Goose rail car are lit up in front of town hall, festive wreaths line the street, and the iconic “Peace on Earth Good Will to Men” sign glows on the southern hillside.
A timer now shuts it off at 10 p.m. to avoid shining into nearby homes.
On Dec. 12 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Noel Night will feature a visit from Santa Claus on the Galloping Goose historic train. Families can sit in Santa’s sleigh pulling the Goose, and get their picture taken with a socially distanced Santa waving from the Goose cab. Mask wearing is recommended.
A tree-lighting ceremony will take place at 5 p.m., and businesses will be open late.
“Come see Santa and shop local for Christmas,” said Chamber Director Susan Lisak.
Christmas gnomesNew this year are three Christmas gnomes that are touring local businesses.
When you seen them, enter your name into a drawing for prizes from that business. Winners are announced every three days.
On Christmas Eve, a grand prize drawing of all the names entered from the different businesses hosting the gnomes will take place. First place will win $100, the second name drawn will get $50, and the third, $25.
Also on the Dolores Chamber Facebook, there will be a virtual window shopping opportunity. Photos of gift items from local shops will be posted on the site.
A Giving Tree is set up at the Ponderosa Restaurant. Pick up a gift request with a child’s name and buy them a gift. There are also gift request available from senior citizens. The gift must be brought to the Ponderosa by Dec. 20, so it can be delivered to the child or senior by Christmas. The Angel Tree is sponsored by the Ponderosa, Dolores Elementary and Teddy Bear School.
The annual holiday lights competition in Dolores begins Dec. 12 and goes until Dec. 18. This year, the public will vote on the best holiday light decorations for residents and businesses. Voting can be done on the Dolores Chamber Facebook page, visitdolores.com or at the chamber office. Winners receive a gift certificate from Empire Electric to help with their power bill.
“Take a tour of Dolores and enjoy the light show, then cast your vote,” Lisak said.
