Crow Canyon center plans to add cabins
Crow Canyon Archaeological Center has been approved for an expansion project on the campus near Cortez.
The center will add six housing units in a piñon-juniper forest south of the main lodge. A first-responder cabin will also be installed.
The 42-by-42-foot cabins will be used to house guests during the archaeology programs in the spring and fall. The cabins and other lodging will increase capacity from 143 beds to 168 beds.
The cabins will replace dorms, which will be converted into office space.
The wastewater treatment system at the campus has the capacity to handle the additional housing unit. Electrical capacity will be expanded.
“We’re working on getting construction started in July if we get our funding lined up,” said campus manager Debra Miller.
Expanded operations will increase staff from 50 to 53.
Planning department continues amid changes
County Administrator Melissa Brunner says the county planning department is undergoing a reorganization, but it continues to meet planning and public needs.
Former director Susan Carver resigned May 22. Planning assistant LeeAnn Milligan will be reassigned to the county’s noxious weed-management department.
“It may be a bit slower, but we will still get business done and questions answered,” Brunner said.
The county is advertising for a new planning director and plans to reorganize the office. No interim director has been named.
“We’re putting together a job description and will be advertising for a director and secretary who have experience and good public service skills,” Brunner said.
The director salary will be between $47,000 and $52,000.
