John Porter leaves a legacy of water storage, McPhee Reservoir in Southwest Colorado

Porter, who brought the dam to life and was GM for 22 years, dies at age 87
John Porter, former manager of the Dolores Water Conservancy District, was recognized in 2017 at a regional meeting in Durango as the official “Water Buffalo” of Southwest Colorado.
McPhee Reservoir captures Dolores River water and provides irrigation for 70,000 acres in Montezuma and Dolores counties, and on the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.
John Porter, a water-use icon in Southwest Colorado, gave the keynote speech at the unveiling of the restored McElmo Flume overlook on U.S. Highway 160 east of Cortez.
In 2000, John Porter was awarded the 20th annual Wayne N. Aspinall Water Leader of the Year Award by the Colorado Water Congress.
John Porter was presented a tribute for his work as a water manager by the Colorado House of Representatives.
