Farm Service Agency issues scam alert

Farm Service Agency customers are the targets of a phone scam.

The caller claims to be a Farm Loan Services representative from Washington, D.C., and states that FSA "owes" you disaster assistance funds. The caller requests checking account information or a credit card number, saying that funds will be credited to them.

The FSA advises customers not to give out personal or financial information.

FSA county committee nomination

The nomination period for local Farm Service Agency county committees begins Sunday.

To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the administrative area where the person is nominated.

Farmers and ranchers may nominate themselves or others. Organizations representing minorities and women also may nominate candidates. To become a candidate, an individual must sign nomination form FSA-669A. The form and other information are available at www.fsa.usda.gov/elections. Forms for must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business on Aug. 1. Elections take place this fall.

FSA county committees make decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs and other agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms.

FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters beginning Nov. 3. Ballots are due back to the local county office either via mail or in person by Dec. 1. Newly elected committee members and alternates take office on Jan. 1, 2015.

It's time to trim up that vegetation, Mancos

The town of Mancos would like to remind folks that it's again time to get out those mowers and clippers. As residents of the town, it's the residents' responsibility to keep properties and the adjacent right of ways trimmed. Grass and or weeds over 12 inches high should be trimmed from yards, and rights of way be kept clear for foot and vehicle traffic. Any vegetation blocking adjacent road signs is required to be trimmed, and corner lots should not screen oncoming traffic.

Library schedules summer programing

The Mancos Public Library's 2014 Summer Reading Program theme is "Fizz, Boom, Read!"

Students ages 5 through 12 are invited to participate in the programs, which will run on Wednesdays 10:30 a.m. -noon on June 11 and 28, and Friday, June 27.

Also planned

June 11: Boulder's own Playground Theater will entertain with classic tails with a twist. A bit of STEAM programing (Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS, and Mathematics) to round out the science-infused summer reading program.

June 18: Bee experts from the Four Corners region will explain how important these little workers are for pollination and honey production. We will also do some fun bee-inspired art.

June 27: The library will host Astronomy Day and Night with the Four Corners Star Gazers. During the day, the library will be home to an indoor Planetarium. We will also have several activities about stars, star gazing, and the solar system to prep us for an evening star gazing party.

Registration is required for the program, and forms can be picked up at the library.

Wholesome snacks will be provided during each program. Younger children may attend (under 5) if accompanied by an adult throughout the program. We will also conduct a reading contest bingo for kids and a word challenge for teens with ice cream when they are half-completed, and books of their choice as prizes for all who complete the bingo or word challenge. Tree Board plans pruning workshop

The Mancos Tree Board will conduct a pruning workshop on June 20 to prune street trees. It will be held in conjunction with the free yard waste drop-off program on every third Saturday of the month. We will concentrate on the area of Grand avenue to Railroad Avenue and Beech Street to Mesa Street. All are welcome to attend to learn better pruning skills and help beautify Mancos. We will meet at the corner of Grand Avenue and Beech Street at 9:30 a.m.
