A 5-year-old boy drowned Sunday night at the Durango Hot Springs, said Bryan Yearout, co-owner of the springs north of Durango.
The incident occurred about 6:10 p.m. in the large swimming pool, he said.
Details of the incident were being pieced together Sunday night. Yearout said footage from security cameras will be reviewed to help understand what happened.
“At this point in time, we have no reason to believe there is anything but accidental with the drowning,” he said.
A staff member who is a trained EMS worker administered CPR until paramedics arrived, he said. EMS then took over, and the father accompanied the child in the ambulance to the hospital, Yearout said.
“There was hope when he left the facility that EMS was going to be able to get a recovery — revive him — but he was pronounced dead, I guess, at the hospital,” he said.
The identity of the child and the family’s hometown were not disclosed.
Karola Hanks, fire marshal with the Durango Fire Protection District, confirmed paramedics received a call at 6:14 p.m. about a 5-year-old boy who was not conscious and not breathing. The agency rushed the child to the hospital and didn’t stay on scene to investigate, so she had no further details.
Efforts to reach a spokesman with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office were not successful Sunday night.
Yearout said hot springs staff, paramedics and law enforcement handled the incident professionally.
The hot springs closed for the remainder of the evening Sunday.
“At this point we’re grieving with the family,” Yearout said. “We’re going to be working on our side of things to figure out what created the situation so that we can try to mitigate any future incidents like this.”
