Over the course of the 2013-14 prep sports season, Jessica Guynes, Madison Young and Shelbie Knuckles led their teams to new heights.
In recognition of their accomplishments, the three recent graduates were selected to participate in the Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State Games, which were held June 4-8 in Alamosa.
Guynes wraps up basketball career
For Guynes, selection to the all-state basketball game came after a 2013-14 season that saw the senior average 11.7 points per game. Guynes also was a force on defense, averaging 2.6 steals per game.
At the All-State Game, Guynes helped lead her “Blue Team” to two victories and the championship.
“It went really well,” said Guynes. “It was an awesome experience to play with a skilled group of girls from different classifications.”
A top student, Guynes plans to attend the University of Wyoming next season, focus on business and education and participate in intramural sports.
For Knuckles, selection to the all-state volleyball game followed a 2013-14 season in which the senior registered 411 kills, 308 digs and 46 aces.
Thanks in part to Knuckles’ play, the Bulldogs finished the regular season undefeated and advanced to the state semifinals.
The valedictorian of her graduating class, Knuckles will attend Grand Canyon University next year. She plans to play intramural sports and possibly try out for the cheerleading team.
Young concludes outstanding volleyball career
For Young, a spot in the all-state volleyball game was secured by virtue of an impressive senior season for the Bulldogs.
Serving as the team’s setter, Young registered 605 assists, 182 digs and 48 aces on the year.
Although Young’s “Red Team” finished third overall in the All-State Games, the senior described the experience as “awesome.”
“The pace of the game was a lot faster than what I’m used to, but it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it,” said Young.
A talented student, Young plans to attend Grand Canyon University next year and major in psychology. Young plans to participate in intramural sports or club sports at the college level.
