FARMINGTON – With help from several New Mexico and Colorado law enforcement agencies, the Farmington Police Department located a 3-year-old girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert early Thursday.
According to a news release from the Farmington Police Department, Destinee Sweeney and her girlfriend had a verbal altercation at the Walmart on the east side of town that resulted in the girlfriend walking away for a few minutes. At that time, according to the statement, Sweeney drove away with her girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter in the car.
Police were called shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday and issued an Amber Alert after Sweeney reportedly made threats about the child’s safety over the phone, according to the release.
Officers gained information about Sweeney and the child’s possible location at a house on County Road 4029 in the Middle Mesa area of Navajo Lake, according to the statement. San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputies, New Mexico State Police and Farmington Police Department officers responded to the area.
Officers were able to locate the girl safely and arrest Sweeney around 2:19 a.m. Thursday, according to the release.
Sweeney was charged with kidnapping and intimidation of a witness, according to the release.
