The Stoner Ranch may be your salvation, if you have deep pockets, that is. The 318-acre ranch and lodge has been listed on the market by Sotheby’s for $13,895,000.
Founded in 1890, Stoner Ranch is one of Colorado’s landmark ranches. It includes a 5,805-square-foot lodge, an original homestead that has been renovated into a charming home.
The Dolores River meanders through the ranch for nearly two miles. The owners refrained from channelizing the river, and instead created a series of 25 pools that are home to large rainbow and cutthroat trout, Sotheby’s International Realty reports. The ranch is listed by Tom and Zach Morse, from Sotheby’s office in Durango.
The property and lodge used to operate as the Stoner Ski Area from 1951 to 1985. It had T-bar lifts that pulled skiers 1,200 feet up to the top. The lifts have since been removed, but the open runs offer excellent backcountry skiing.
The Stoner property is currently working cattle ranch with lush pastures in the Dolores Valley situated below Haycamp Mesa. In the mid 1980s the lodge hosted a party by Sonny Barger, the former leader of the Hell’s Angels. In 2001, investors proposed a plan to turn the ranch into a private golf course with deluxe home sites, but the plan was eventually dropped.
According to the Montezuma County assessors office, the Stoner Ranch is owned by Stoner Ranch Properties, with a mailing address in Chicago, Illinois. The ranch sold for $8.5 million in 2008.
