Multiple local restaurants have partnered together to provide cheap delivery to Cortez residents amid the pandemic.
Cortez Eatz, which began in December, offers $5 delivery from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Orders can be delivered if customers reside between U.S. Highway 491 and Colorado Highway 145, from Road G to Road L. Restaurants taking part include Cold Stone Creamery, Stonefish Sushi, Gustavo’s Mexican Restaurant, Mona Makes, Blondie’s Trophy Room, Lotsa Pasta, The Wigglin’ Pig, J.Fargo’s, Mi Mexico, Loungin’ Lizard and La Casita.
Jeremy Yarbrough, owner of Cold Stone Creamery in Cortez, started the informal service after conversations with other local restaurateurs about the lack of delivery services in the area.
He volunteered to answer the phones, and some of his younger employees would deliver the food.
Yarbrough, who owns another Cold Stone in Farmington, noted that GrubHub would charge them a 25% fee, forcing the business to offset that by raising their prices proportionately.
“We didn’t want to do that here so we just keep it simple with the $5 delivery fee,” Yarbrough said.
The $5 fees goes to the driver, along with any tips.
Yarbrough mentioned that while it’s not something he intends to do forever, it has been a worthwhile endeavor.
“It’s not a really a business per se,” Yarbrough said. “But I think it’s helped. It’s definitely been worth our time to do.”
