Just a shout south of the Colorado line is a place that has the next handful of months planned out for music lovers.
Tico Time River Resort in Aztec along the Animas River, kicked off its live music season last weekend. It has festivals and weekends of entertainment planned through the beginning of October along with camping, RVing, zip-lining, stand-up paddleboarding, disc golf, a 60-foot challenge course and a host of other activities.
According to the resort’s website, “Tico Time” is a phrase “used to describe Costa Ricans’ nonchalant attitude toward time, and their relaxed attitude in general. It is similar to island time.” It’s also a newspaper in Costa Rica – The Tico Times, said Ashlee Garcia, the resort’s manager, adding that the owners, Robert and Jenny Holmes of Durango, travel there often and that’s where their inspiration came from.
The festivals feature an assortment of music genres, including bluegrass, reggae, EDM, country and hard rock.
First up will be the resort’s Bluegrass Festival, the weekend of April 29 to May 2. The fest features a full lineup of bands, including many that have graced these A&E pages, such as Stillhouse Junkies, High Country Hustle, Liver Down the River, Six Dollar String Band, Lala Bones and Alex Blocker.
On the heels of the Bluegrass Festival will be the resort’s Reggae Festival, May 13 to 15, which along with a full schedule, will also feature a tribute to Bunny Wailer, who died in March at age 73.
As the popularity of the resort grows, so, too, does the focus on music, Garcia said.
“I really think that Robert just really wanted to get into music,” she said. “It’s an awesome RV park, but really he wanted to focus more on the music aspect of Tico Time and making it more of a music venue.”
Garcia said people should plan to buy their tickets ahead of time online. There is a half-day and full-day admission options as well as three- and four-days and even longer. There are RV hookups and spaces to tent camp.
And, following the “Tico Time” philosophy, Garcia said the primary goal of the resort is to kick back and have fun.
“Really, we just want everybody to have a great time,” Garcia said. “This facility is family-friendly, so we want everyone to come out, have a great time, bring their family, bring their friends, spend time in the sun, listen to live music and just really have a great time; that’s what Tico Time is about.”
