Eli Tomac of Cortez, who entered Atlanta Motor Speedway after a commanding win on Saturday, finished fifth on Tuesday and slipped slightly in the series standings with three races to go.
The defending champion got off to a slow start Tuesday and was eighth after the first lap.
Series runner-up Ken Roczen went to the lead in the first lap after passing holeshot winner and series leader Cooper Webb, and led all 14 laps for his fourth win of the year.
Tomac passed Dean Wilson in Lap 5 to move into seventh place, and after a strong run in the whoops, roared out of the turn to take sixth place from Marvin Musquin in Lap 7.
Webb, who lost ground throughout Saturday’s race, again faded on Tuesday and allowed Tomac to slip by in Lap 13 as he apparently clipped Justin Barcia’s rear wheel and tipped over. Tomac remained in fifth the final two laps and finished 20 seconds behind Roczen.
Jason Anderson, who lined up for the main event after winning the last-chance qualifying heat, rebounded from a stalled engine and crash in Heat 2 to place third. the
Earlier Tuesday, Tomac was fifth-fastest in timed practice laps, with a best lap of 1 minute, 35.513 seconds. Anderson posted the fastest lap, at 1:34.232. Roczen, Chase Sexton and Wilson filled the gap between Anderson and Tomac.
Tomac also was fifth in his qualifying heat, after starting sixth. Musquin won the heat start to finish, and Sexton, Joey Savatgy and Dylan Ferrandis rounded out the top five.
The AMA Monster Energy Supercross Series remains at Atlanta Motor Speedway for a third race Saturday before heading to Salt Lake City and Rice-Eccles Stadium for the final two races of the season April 24 and May 1.
