For years, members of the Montezuma-Cortez High School softball team have talked about beating Durango.
Finally, on Sept. 2, it happened as the Panthers defeated their longtime rivals on the road 11-9.
Keying the Panthers victory was a big sixth inning during which the Panthers scored four runs to turn a 8-5 deficit into a 9-8 lead.
M-CHS added two runs in to top of the seventh inning to pull ahead 11-8 before limiting Durango to one run in the final inning.
With the victory, M-CHS improved to 2-2 on the season and equaled their season win total for all of last year.
With the loss, Durango fell to 1-2 on the year.
Next up for the Panthers will be a doubleheader against Delta, which will be played in Cortez on Sept. 6. The games will begin at 11 a.m. and approximately 1 p.m.
