Looking to tune their swings one last time before regionals, the Montezuma-Cortez High School golf team traveled to Durango to compete in tournaments on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9.
Playing at Dalton Ranch Golf Club on Sept. 8, the Panthers enjoyed mixed results, finishing with a team score of 238.
Leading M-CHS in the tournament’s wet conditions was Hayden Plewe, whose shot a 1-over 72 to finish second overall.
Also putting together a solid round for the Panthers, Tristan Shelby fired a 78.
Rounding out the Panthers varsity scorers were Levi Gross, who shot an 88, Cristoffer Rudosky, who shot a 92 and Clifton Whyte, who, replacing the injured Ryan Aiken, shot a score of 100.
Competing at Hillcrest Golf Club on Sept. 9, M-CHS shot one of its highest team scores of the season, finishing with a combined total of 257.
Leading the Panthers with a third-place overall finish was Plewe, who fired a round of 77.
Shooting rounds of 90 for the Panthers were Aiken, Rudosky and Shelby. Gross was unable to compete in the tournament due to sickness.
With less than a week remaining until the West Slope Regional Tournament, the Panthers will use the upcoming week to hone their swings.
The team will then travel to Hillcrest Golf Club for the two-day Regional tournament, which will take place Sept. 15-16.
“Our goal is to go (to Durango), get into regionals and get this team back to state,” said Panthers head coach Micah Rudosky earlier this season. “We have the experience and we know what it takes. I think we’ll have a good opportunity.”
