Wednesday, Oct. 15
5:13 p.m. Emergency crews were dispatched to the Plaza Laundry for a reported vehicle versus child accident. When police arrived on the scene, there was a large group of people standing around a woman holding a small child. She told the officer she was pushing her child in her stroller down the sidewalk and was crossing the entrance of the business when a car hit her and her child, knocking the child out of the stroller. She said she was pretty shook up but felt they were all okay. Medics responded to check on both the mother and the 5-year-old. Both refused medical attention. The driver said he was checking for traffic to clear and when he saw that traffic was clear, he proceeded to the parking lot. He was going very slow when he hit the stroller. The man was very shook up and said he had a small child and he just could not imagine someone hitting his child. The officer explained that no one was hurt, but that the man was going to receive a citation for failure to yield right of way to pedestrian. There was not damage to the vehicle either.
Sunday, Oct. 19
2:28 a.m. An officer responded to Wal-Mart for a report of an intoxicated male passed out in the checkout lanes. When the officer arrived, the 18-year-old man was unresponsive. After several minutes of trying to wake him up, he stood up and was unsteady on his feet. The 18-year-old said he went to the store with his friends but that they had left him there. He was given a ride to a shelter and issued a summons for underage consumption of alcohol.
Sunday, Oct. 19
4:17 p.m. Officers were requested to respond to a fire in the road near the 100 block of W. Empire Street. When officers arrived in the area, a burning couch in the center of the road was observed. Shortly after the Cortez Fire Department arrived, the fire was put out. The firefighters moved the couch off the road and cleaned up the debris. No structures or other property was damaged and there was no witnesses or suspects at the time.
Sunday, Oct. 19
6:40 p.m. An officer responded to the 200 block of S. Madison for a physical disturbance, when the officer arrived, he saw a woman standing in the front yard crying, while on a cellular phone. Suddenly, a second female emerged from the front door of the residence and started hitting the female on the phone. A male subject that was sitting on the patio, stood up and began yelling at the two females. The officer had to pull the woman off of the one with the phone and place her in handcuffs. The fight was apparently over the fact that the woman on the phone borrowed the other woman’s car and was gone too long, about two hours.
Monday, Oct. 20
6:19 p.m. An officer arrested a man at the northwest corner of City Park because he had a warrant out of Garfield County. While searching the male after arrest and found methamphetamine in his wallet. He told the officers he got the drugs from a guy in Phoenix. The man was taken to jail and the evidence was tested and sealed.
Monday, Oct. 20
9:57 p.m. An officer responded to a local hotel for a woman who reported that two men took $650 from her. After further investigation, the money was located and it was determined that the woman was highly intoxicated and may have given the money to the men. The officer couldn’t prove the men committed theft or if the woman mistakenly gave the men more money than intended due to her intoxication level and the money was returned. No summons were issued.
