After enjoying success at a regional dance competition in November, the Montezuma-Cortez High School dance and cheer teams attended the state spirit competition in Denver, Dec. 5-6.
Leading the way for M-CHS was the school dance team, which placed seventh out of 23 teams in the hip-hop division with a score of 67.75. Mountain Vista High School placed first in the competition with a score of 85.974.
Dance coach Teaa Warinner said that the M-CHS team was made up of 13 dancers and two alternates. The group practiced nearly every weekday morning throughout the fall and danced at home football games.
“The girls thought that the (state) competition was good,” said Warinner. “Half of our team had never competed and this was my first year. I was proud of our performance.”
With its competition season now complete, the M-CHS team will turn its attention to the winter season, during which it will perform at home basketball games. The team will also host a dance clinic for children from kindergarten through eighth grade. The clinic will take place Jan. 20-24.
Also competing at the state competition was the M-CHS cheerleading team, which placed 33rd out of 35 teams in the Class 4A Cheer competition.
The M-CHS team scored 49.525 points. Glenwood Springs won the competition with a score of 90.225.
The cheer team, which is coached by Emily Martin and April Beardsley, will perform at basketball games throughout the winter season.
