Tis the season to be jolly! "Old Man winter" has paid a visit to our area, blanketing the ground with several inches of much needed snow.
With that, we need to keep in mind the danger of driving on snow, ice and slush.
Always maintain a safe speed; remember that 4-wheel drive does not make you invincible, and it is always a very good idea to pack extra items in your vehicle such as warm hats, gloves, blankets, snacks and water, and a working flash light. You never know when you or someone else may need them in an emergency.
I am going to take this opportunity to mention several different safety issues during the holiday and winter season that we may not take the time to address:
For those who love the real Christmas trees, water daily. They dry out very quickly and can be a huge fire danger. Many people have lost homes and lives due to fires caused by tree lights, or candles. Remember to unplug lights when not at home, and also at bed time.
Check and replace smoke detectors and CO2 detectors. Make sure batteries are fresh and devices are working correctly.
Keep fireplace and wood stove chimneys and pipes swept and clean. Always remember to use a metal container to place ashes in and store away from homes and decks.
Please make sure your address numbers are easily readable on your mail boxes and residence. Many of the numbers are faded by the sun, or missing all together. In an emergency, every moment is critical. It is up you to to make it easier for us to help you. Remember, if we can't find you, we cannot help you!
Dolores Fire has received a Colorado State EMS provider grant to help our department to purchase a new Ambulance. The Ambulance should be delivered early this summer. The department is also working on receiving a new pumper truck with help through a grant from DOLA.
Emergency Response for Dolores Fire Department from September to currant date 12/14/14 is as follows: Fire calls: 6 EMS:55
Please enjoy the Holiday Season safely and responsively. From all of us at Dolores Fire Department, we wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
