Willowtail, DAC team up on residency program
In partnership with Willowtail SpringsNature Preserve and Education Center in Mancos, the Durango Arts Center announces 2015 the artists' residency program for creatives of various mediums living and working in La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma, Dolores and San Juan counties.
DAC and Willowtail aim to provide one-week residencies.
Resident artists are expected to propose and deliver a community offering based on their experience within one calendar year of their residency, such as a lecture, slideshow of work, pop-up exhibition or performance. This opportunity is open to DAC members and non-members.
Through With Chew Week gets boost from officials
Montezuma County dentists, physicians and the Public Health Department have proclaimed the week of Feb. 15-21 as "Through With Chew Week" to call attention to the use of smokeless tobacco.
In 2013, 5.7 percent of high school students in the U.S. used smokeless tobacco.
Educators and medical professionals from the Health Department will address health risks commonly associated with this type of tobacco.

Mancos Town Gallery plans civil rights photo exhibit
The civil rights portfolio from the Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography show will open on Jan. 23 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.
This show features works by Gordon Parks, Dan Weiner, Charles Moore, Leonard Freed, Matt Herron, Flip Schulke, Benedict J. Fernanez and Joe Schwartz.
This portfolio is loaned to the Mancos Town Gallery from the collection of Mancos resident Betsy Harrison. The Mancos Town Gallery is at 103 E. Bauer Avenue in Mancos.
Explore wonderland at Mancos State Park
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon, discover the winter wonderland at Mancos State Park.
There will be snowshoeing if there is snow, and lake exploration if there's safe ice.
The program is presented by San Juan Mountains Association and Colorado Parks and Wildlife and is for families with children ages 4 and up. The class is limited to 20 people.
