Playing in front of a raucous crowd on Feb. 10, the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls basketball team defeated a Durango High School team composed of varsity and junior varsity players, 47-25.
For the Lady Panthers, the win was highlighted by offensive efficiency as nearly every player on the M-CHS broke into the scoring column.
“The girls got after it from tipoff and brought energy,” said Panthers head coach John McHenry. “It was a great team effort, and the energy level was definitely there.”
Leading the Panthers in scoring in the victory was Savannah Jacket, who contributed 11 points. Katrina Lee had nine points, which came via three-point field goals.
“Katrina Lee came off the bench and drained threes,” said McHenry. “Savannah Jacket had a big game offensively, and Naomi Pinnecoose played a key role on defense and swatted several shots away.”
With the win, M-CHS improved to 7-10 on the season.
Next up for the Lady Panthers will be a home matchup against Pagosa Springs on Feb. 13, followed by a home game against Bayfield on Feb. 14.
“Our goal is to keep improving and learn from our upcoming matchups,” McHenry said.
