Dress up for Mancos Melt contest

Get dressed as your own personal favorite for a costume contest and night of swingin' music at the Columbine, AKA "The Avenger Bar" Friday night, March 6 beginning at 9 p.m.

Back by popular request is Last Nickel, composed of Chris Bouton on guitar, John Chmelir on guitar, Bobby Wintringham on mandolin, Andy Hutchinson on banjo and Nikki Sargent on bass.

Snacks will be provided and awards for best male and female Super Hero/Heroine/Villain costumes.

Golf tournament registration starts at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Columbine. Pick up score cards and position assignments for the 1 p.m. shotgun start. Bring your own putter and golf ball for each two-man team. Fee is $20 per team.

Everest survivor presents at lecture

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College presents "Climb Your Own Everest: Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone" on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. This free presentation will be held in Noble Hall, Room 130.

On May 19 and 20, 2012, Dr. Jon Kedrowski was making his first summit attempt on Mount Everest. As the weather turned violent, he stopped 1,000 feet from the top. Descending, he witnessed one of the deadliest nights in the history of Everest.

Later that year, he overcame that experience and climbed the mountain twice, and summited on his second attempt. Learn about his experience and how he trained for it, as well as the water research done while he was there.

Planning commission to appoint member

The Town of Mancos Planning and Zoning Commission will meet Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Board members are expected to consider the application of John Boulton to serve on the Planning Commission and select a vice-chairperson of the Planning Commission. There will be a Public Hearing and Ordinance 694 Series 2015: Historic Preservation Code. Board members are also expected to discuss accessory dwelling units.

FFA helping out Mancos family

Cortez FFA is doing a fundraiser for Mancos student Hayden Kocourek.

All money collected by Friday, Feb. 20 will be donated to help with Hayden's medical costs. If you can't make it to the fundraiser but would like to contribute, you can drop off donations at the high school agriculture department or send money to Amanda Ramos through school mail. The Cortez FFA Officer Team has set a goal of raising $500.

Medicine Horse to host training

The Medicine Horse Center will host its spring 2015 training for those that wish to volunteer and train with Medicine Horse Center Therapeutic riding instructors. The training will be Tuesday, March 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Medicine Horse is recruiting volunteers to assist as side walkers and Leaders for Therapeutic Riding Sessions in Durango and Mancos. Volunteers must be able to walk for up to an hour outdoors. Mancos Days needs winning art

The Mancos Days committee is seeking a theme and poster artwork for 2015. The selected artwork and theme will appear on the poster, day-of schedule and flyer, radio ads and other media.

The winner will receive a gift certificate to a local restaurant and will be credited on the poster.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13. The contest is open to all ages and the winner will be notified by March 30.

Medicine Horse offers youth programs

Medicine Horse Center is excited to offer four-week (4 sessions) Youth Horsemanship Programs at its Mancos location. Students will gain confidence with horse handling, grooming and riding skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Classes begin Sunday, March 8 for four consecutive weeks. Cost: $140. Limit of four students per group. The 9-to-12-year-old group meets from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the 13-to-15-year-old group meets from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Library offers quilting workshop

?The Mancos Public Library in coordination with the Dolores Mountain Quilters offers a free quilting workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 1-3 p.m. in the library's Community Meeting Room.

This will be a hand-sewn project, using the English Paper Piecing method to make a pincushion. All fabric for the pincushion will be provided. Participants should bring needle, thread, thimble and scissors possible.

Library offers program for kids, parents

A program for children 4 and 5 years old and their parents will be offered at the Mancos Public Library, 211 E. First St.

Parents are welcome to attend with or without their preschoolers. There will be a informational session, Thursday, Feb. 19, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mancos Public Library Community Meeting Room.

Watch your child to build a vocabulary. There will be food, free books, stories, activities and parent education. Information: 970-769-3879.
