Distillery to host Farmington band
Mancos Valley Distillery, 116 N. Main St., will present Secondhand Strings Friday, April 24. Doors open at 5 p.m. and music at 8 p.m. with a $3 cover.
Blue grassy is the best way to describe Secondhand Strings, an acoustic duo from Farmington, New Mexico. Members Harris Brogan and Justin Brown meld today's newgrass funk with the roots of yesteryear's blues and folk. Taking cues from their influences, ranging from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Django Reinhardt and Doc Watson, it's no surprise that their set list is eclectic and ever changing.
Harris picked up his first guitar at the age of 16. Music came naturally, along with singing and song writing.
Harris played in several bands in central Kansas and the Kansas City area before moving to New Mexico.
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, Harris adds banjo and mandolin to Secondhand Strings acoustic sound.
Harris' innate ability to write a variety of songs adds to the uniqueness of the band's sound. Harris credits his musical inspirations to his parents, who introduced him at a young age to the sounds of the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Doc and Merle Watson, and Bob Dylan.
Kindergarten open house changed
The Kindergarten Open House has been changed from Wednesday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 6. The time will remain the same: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. We look forward to meeting incoming kindergartners and their families.
Please stop in at your leisure on May 6 and enjoy some cookies and punch, meet the teachers, principal and secretary and view the kindergarten classrooms.
During Open House we will be providing additional information about our summer program and registration.

Durango library to show 'The Connection'
A free screening premiere of the documentary "The Connection" will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
The documentary explores the mind-body approach to health care. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, journalist and filmmaker Shannon Harvey traveled the world in search of the missing link in health care. She interviewed leading scientists and met people with stories of recovery from severe back pain, heart disease, infertility, cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Animas City Cemetery tour offered Saturday
The Animas Museum will offer a tour of the Animas City Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Actors in period costume will tell stories of the residents of Durango's oldest cemetery.
Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the museum, 3065 West Second Ave. to carpool. People also may meet at the 2600 block of North College Drive where a costumed guide will escort the group to the cemetery.
The tour is free. Donations will benefit the Animas Museum.
