The retention ponds built in the wake of the Aug. 5, 2015 Gold King Mine spill were part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s early efforts to deal with heavy metals being carried into the Animas River watershed. The mine and 47 other sites are now included in the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund site, although the number of sites that will be included in the cleanup plan could change, EPA officials said.
