A new town trustee could be appointed at Wednesday night's town board meeting, as two candidates have submitted letters of interest in serving on the board.

According to paperwork field with the town, Gina Roberts and Darrel Ellis have both asked to be considered.

Roberts has been a Mancos resident for the past 12 years and is a current Planning and Zoning Board Member.

Ellis, a town historian and writer, is a Mancos native and is a historian with the Mancos Valley Historical Society. Ellis is also a columnist for the Mancos Times.

The open seat came after former trustee James Maestas resigned in July.

The term of office for the vacancy is until April 2016, at which time the appointed party would have the ability to run again for the seat.

End of pot moratorium on tap

Also on the agenda for Wednesday night is the first reading of an ordinance to amend the retail and medical marijuana code and lift the moratorium on new licenses for the two, which has been in place since December 2014.

If the board moves for and approves the first reading, a draft ordinance will be sent to the planning commission for a public hearing to update Chapter 16 Land Use Code where necessary. Once reviewed by the planning commission, a public hearing will be set at a future Board of Trustees meeting.

The board and town administration have been working for months to revise the code. Some of the main changes, according to the ordinance, involve the license types allowed within town and the fee structure for the permit process.

The code states that all medical and retail marijuana establishments are allowed within town limits, but medical and retail marijuana-infused products manufacturers and marijuana cultivation facilities must be co-located with a medical or retail marijuana store.

Ordinance also proposed to raise the fees for the retail and marijuana permit applications to be in line with what the state charges.
