Attorneys general hear account of Gold King Mine spill

Prosecutors learn about complexities of cleaning mines
Colorado Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman and Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes talk about issues surrounding the Gold King Mine spill Wednesday during a tour of the site north of Silverton.
On Wednesday, a worker walks around one of the five retention ponds constructed below the Gold King Mine. The ponds collect sediment before water enters Cement Creek in an effort to remove heavy metals from the runoff before it hits the Animas River.
Five retention ponds have been built below Gold King Mine in an effort to allow metals to settle before water migrates downstream. A tour of the mine Wednesday offered a primer of events from Aug. 5, when an accidental breach of the mine sent some 3 million gallons of contaminated wastewater into the Animas River.
