The Montezuma-Cortez volleyball team finished with a 2-2 record at the Delta Tournament this weekend, to bring its season record to 3-6.
The Panthers (3-6) were first tested on Friday by Pagosa Springs (8-3), losing in three straight sets (17-25, 26-27, 21-25).
However, they rebounded from the early loss to take down Aspen (0-4) in four games (25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12).
“It was pretty much a team effort,” said head coach Andi Pickens. “Everybody played well together.”
On Saturday, the Panthers again split two matches, first defeating Gunnison in four games (25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17), then falling to an undefeated Delta team in three (25-21, 25-17, 25-13).
“The only thing I think they struggled with was finishing a game,” Pickens said noting the team’s close losses. “They would let teams come back.”
“I think they played defense really well,” she continued. “They were really scrappy in all of the games.”
Pickens also said that the tournament highlighted aspects that the Panthers’ need to refine as the season continues.
“I think we can improve our serving and using blocks,” she said. “We played against some really big girls that could block really well, so that was part of our struggle. But we will work on that.”
The Panthers will next host Monument Valley (2-2) on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m.
