It’s official: Durango is one of the top 10 places in the nation to get outside.
The little Southwest city recently came in at No. 2 in USA Today’s Reader’s Choice 10 Best Destinations for Outdoor Enthusiasts. Travel experts and editors presented a list of 20 nominees, and the public decided to recognize Durango for its array of outdoor recreational activities.
Surrounded by waterways, campgrounds, hiking trails and a 19th-century railroad, Durango was praised for offering outside recreation options for everyone year-round, whether it’s floating the Animas River in the summer or hitting the ski slopes in winter.
Durango came in second to Santa Fe. Cities and towns in California, Montana, South Dakota, Florida, North Carolina, Oregon and Wyoming also made the final cut.
USA Today’s 10 Best contest is launched every other week with a one-month window for readers to cast their votes. The contest recognizes the top destinations in the U.S. and around the world for things to see and do.
