Mancos Blue Jays win homecoming game, 40-24
The Mancos Blue Jays won their third straight game on Friday during their Homecoming matchup with the Sanford Indians.
Senior Drew Morgan got Mancos on the board in the first quarter by scooping up a Sanford fumble and returning it for a touchdown.
Morgan had 133 yards rushing and two rushing scores on the evening, one from 34 yards out and another from 44 yards. On both plays, Morgan faked a toss to one side then reverse pivoted and took off down the opposite sideline for scores.
“You put the ball in his hands and he’s dangerous,” co-head coach Josh Gardner said of Morgan.
The Blue Jays other running backs also found success, with junior Axel Bonde racking up 145 yards on the ground and showcasing his speed on a 75-yard touchdown rush, and senior Everett Strazza-Whalen scoring twice on runs of 45 yards and 31 yards, rushing for a total 137 yards.
Mancos limited the Indians’ passing attack with great play in the secondary, and sophomore Kaleb Hargraves had an interception for his third game in a row.
After dropping their first game at Norwood, Friday’s homecoming win against Sanford makes three straight victories for the Blue Jays.
Nucla sweeps Blue Jays volleyball team
After losing at home to Dolores on Tuesday, the Mancos Blue Jays hosted the Nucla Mustangs on Thursday.
Nucla entered the contest at 7-1, and the Mustangs showed why they had only one loss on the season en route to a three game sweep of Mancos.
Mancos struggled in Game 1 by doing too much and hitting the ball out of bounds, giving Nucla points, losing 13-25.
Game two was closer, but late Mancos errors let Nucla pull away for a 25-17 win.
Taryn Gordanier and Nicole Hess landed spikes in game three to pull Mancos within five points, but Nucla junior Carlie Wytulka pushed the Mustangs on to a 25-15 win to take the match in three games.
“We’ve got to reduce our errors and score more,” said Mancos coach Brittany Lang.
Mancos has another home game on Tuesday, Sept. 29 against Dove Creek at 4 p.m.
