The County Chamber of Commerce on Montezuma and Dolores counties met at Tuckers coffee shop Monday night in Dolores.
Ersking Mallet, vice president, presided with Edson W. Barr in the secretary chair. Routine business was discussed.
San Juan Basin Seed Show
The first San Juan basin seed show is going to be held at Durango November 7, 8, and 9. In connection with this will be held an apple show and a dressed turkey show. Also poultry and general agricultural school will be held.
Everybody in Montezuma County who has produce, seed, apples, potatoes or dressed turkeys to show should be getting ready, it is a place to show our wares.
Dove Creek Man Dead as Result Burns; Home Lost
L. A. Bush received probable fatal injuries and his home and all its contents were destroyed by fire Monday morning.
Bush, who lived eight miles west of Dove Creek, got up about sic o’clock to build a fire which he attempted to start with kerosene. There was an explosion and soon the whole house was wrapped in flames. Bush, his wife and child fled in their night clothes.
Change New Mexico Lbr. Mfg. Co. to Montezuma Lumber Co. Soon
“But change the name of Arkansas – never,” is the theme of an old poem which a few of our readers will remember.
Apropos to this we have the information that the name of the New Mexico Lumber Manufacturing Co., which operated the big sawmill at McPhee, is soon to be changed to the Montezuma Lumber Company. Just like that.
“Dust Bowl” Farmers Plant Winter Wheat
Lamar – Farmers in many sections of southeastern Colorado are planning to drill winter wheat as a result of the good rain that fell a week ago in most of this section of the state. With moisture in the soil of the “dust bowl”, conditions are reported good for the planting of wheat.
New Game Warden
Jim Henry of Cortez returned the first of the week with his commission as game warden for Montezuma and Dolores counties. Jim has started to work and aims to do this country some constructive work.
Cows in Rio Grande Are Fed Grapefruit
McAllen, Texas. – Cows in the lower Rio Grande valley are having to eat grapefruit and they like it. Freezing weather recently killed most of the grass in this section. Several farmers began experiments by feeding their cows culled grapefruit and they were so successful that other farmers have taken up the practice.
Zoo Needs More Swans, So Cowboy Ropes Some
Fort Worth, Texas. – Cowboys are supposed to rope steers and maybe now and then a mountain lion for sport, but Julian Frazier, cowboy who turned zookeeper, claims the world championship in the swan-roping cup.
War Starts, Italy Invades Ethiopia
Italy began invasion of Ethiopia early Thursday, according to radio news broadcasts received yesterday. The advance began on three fronts with raids of air plans and backed by artillery fire.
The League of Nations has not taken very definite action, except that England and France have announced economic and financial reprisals. There is no indication of immediate armed intervention by either of these nations at present.
