The Montezuma-Cortez softball team struggled early in each of its games against Montrose and Grand Junction this weekend.
On Friday, the Panthers hosted Montrose for a double-header. In the first game, Montrose scored nine runs in the top of the first and cruised to an 18-5 victory.
The Panthers scored three runs in the final inning to make game two closer – losing 5-10 – but walks and errors nagged M-CHS and allowed Montrose to score six runs in the second inning.
M-CHS was back at it on Saturday with a double-header against Grand Junction.
Again, the Panthers fell behind early, and dropped consecutive games 4-20.
Weslie Kirks and Stevee Brenner were 2-for-3 in game one and Shavargus Noyes was 2-2. Abri Conklin and Tayla Topaha led the Panthers’ offense in game two, each going 2-3.
The Panthers are now 2-13 on the season, with their final game schedule for Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Durango at 5 p.m.
