Elks has booth space for Christmas Bazaar
The Cortez Elks Lodge is hosting its 20th annual Christmas Bazaar on Sunday, Dec. 6, and booth space is available.
The cost for the tables or space is $30, and the Elks Lodge provides the table. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and end after Santa Claus leaves.
“It is also our duty and pleasure to help children and their families have a nice Christmas,” said Sally Gleason. “As I say, ‘Life is all about the children.’”
All proceeds from the tables are used for scholarships, food baskets and Christmas Angel Tree.

Farmers union plans dinner for meeting
The Four Corners Rocky Mountain Farmers Union plans “A Celebration of Family Farming and Ranching” at its annual meeting Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Arriola Community Center.
A home-cooked turkey dinner is $9 per plate and free for kids under 16. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and dinner is at 5:45 p.m.

‘Stop Common Core’ is subject of event
“Stop Common Core” is the theme of a special public event on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Baymont Hotel in Cortez.
Speaker Anita Stapleton’s presentation will address Common Core and why it concerns you and your children and grandkids. It will include time for questions and answers.
All are welcome, and free child care for children up to age 5 will be provided at the hotel.

Winning bloggers head to Mesa Verde
Eight bloggers are visiting Colorado this week as part of a campaign to attract younger and more diverse visitors to national parks.
The bloggers won a contest to promote the National Park Service’s “Find Your Park” campaign, using social media.
They’re visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park and Mesa Verde National Park.
The adventure is organized by the National Park Foundation, the official charity of the national parks.
The Park Service celebrates its centennial next year, and the foundation says it wants to make sure parks are relevant for another 100 years.
Work session on water, land planned
A work session focusing on the relationship between decreased water supply and increasing population and housing needs is 1–5 p.m. Oct. 23 at the La Plata Administration Building, 1101 E. Second Ave., in Durango.
It’s geared to land-use planners, water utility personnel, local government officials and interested parties.
It’s sponsored by the American Planners Association—Colorado Chapter, La Plata County, and the Water Information Program, and qualifies for 4 CM credits for planners (.75 legal). The cost is $35 or $50 for those seeking credits.
Topics include American West and Colorado water realities and issues, water- and land-use planning overview, Colorado land use regulations, and land-use planning tools and techniques.

Farmington hospital offers flu vaccinations
San Juan Regional Medical Center will offer free vaccinations at five different Four Corners locations.
The “Fight the Flu” campaign will host clinics in October and November to ensure that as many people as possible are vaccinated.
San Juan Regional Medical Center’s free clinics will be available for adults 18 and older, and will include a drive-thru option. Vaccinations are provided on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out.
Those attending the drive-through clinic at San Juan Regional Medical Center’s north visitor parking lot should wear short-sleeve shirts and be ready for their vaccine by the time their car reaches the nurse.
There will be signs posted to help drivers find the parking lot, located at the corner of Maple Street and Schwartz Avenue.
