Montezuma-Cortez and Dove Creek wrestlers competed at the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction last weekend, with wrestlers representing over 40 schools from Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona.
M-CHS’ Josh Ramos and Dove Creek’s Case Baughman were the only area wrestlers to place in the tournament.
Ramos went 4-1 on the weekend with two pins and placed sixth in the 138-pound class, while Baughman finished in fifth place with a 4-2 record in the 132-pound division.
Stevie Fuentes (106 pounds), Tom Kerwin (182 pounds) and Victor Perez (HWT) all finished with winning records for the Panthers, each going 3-2, and Matthew Broughton was 1-2 in the 120-pound class.
Garret Boren (126 pounds), Jared Gray (132 pounds), Sonny Boren (145 pounds), Briggs Durban (152 pounds) and Rielly Birch (160 pounds) each finished 0-2 to wrap up the M-CHS competitors.
Ricky Adams and Rhett Quackenbush were the only other Dove Creek wrestlers.
Adams was 1-2 in the 170-pound class, and at 120-pounds, Quackenbush finished 0-2.
Panther Classic
While M-CHS and Dove Creek were in Grand Junction, Dolores and Mancos traveled to Piedra Vista, New Mexico for the Panther Classic.
The Bears went 4-1 on the day, losing in duals against Cleveland, Farmington, Los Alamos and Grants, but they squeaked out a 34-30 win over Gallup.
Forfeiting at seven different weight classes made competing as a team difficult for Dolores, but all six competiting wrestlers came home with at least one win.
Brandon Ward went 4-1 in the 113-pound class, with his only loss coming to two-time New Mexico Class 5A state champion, Treavon Nicoley.
Josh Petrow (120 pounds) and Skieler Grooms (138 pounds) each went 3-2 in the tournament, Cameron Chavez (106 pounds) and Aiden Hopcia were both 2-3 and David Schmittel (182 pounds) finished 1-4.
Mancos also took on Cleveland High, but finished with better results.
Nick Valdez (138 pounds) and Everett Strazza-Whalen (220-pounds) each won by pin, Drew Morgan (160 pounds) won by major decision, 15-2, and Austin Howerton (182 pounds) won by forfeit.
Valdez, Morgan, Howerton and Strazza-Whalen all won by pin in the Blue Jays’ dual against Miyamura.
Then, matched up against Piedra Vista High School, Morgan and Howerton were the only Mancos wrestlers with victories.
Mancos competed in two more duals on the weekend, but results were unavailable.
