EPA proposal released ahead of town vote
Environmental Protection Agency documents showing the proposed Superfund site includes 48 mines in the Silverton area – 26 that drain into the Upper Animas River, seven that drain into Mineral Creek and 15 that drain into Cement Creek. The site would be called the Bonita Pike Mining District Site if it receives National Priorities Listing to clean up contamination.
The Mayflower Mill northeast of Silverton is one of the mines that is proposed to be part of a Superfund designation.
