Montezuma-Cortez seniors Andrew Laymon and Ian Roberson have been named to the 2016 All-Conference Second Team for the 4A/5A Southwestern League.
The two seniors were major factors in the Panthers’ offense, as the team finished 4-15 on the season and 1-9 in the 4A/5A Southwestern League.
Head coach Travis Greenlee said that Laymon’s baseball experience and knowledge were keys to his success, specifically at the plate.
“He understands the game,” said Greenlee. “He’s played a lot of ball and every time he came up to bat he took the approach that we were talking about. So as a senior doing that, it made it a lot easier for us coaches to tell our younger kids the same thing.”
And Laymon’s patience translated, as the senior finished top five in the Southwestern League in batting average (.521), home runs (3), slugging percentage (.937) and stolen bases (10), and led the league in on base percentage (.635).
Roberson was another one of Greenlee’s senior leaders.
“He’s a quiet kid that doesn’t say a whole lot,” explained Greenlee. “But he leads through his actions and goes hard all the time. Where Andrew would talk a little more, Ian was more the silent leader.”
Roberson hit .382 on the season and led the Panthers in RBIs (19) and triples (5).
