The Cortez Kiwanis Club and Groundhound Lake RV Park had 23 kids register for their fourth annual youth fishing tournament on Saturday.
And by scheduling the event during Colorado’s free-fishing weekend, parents and adults were able to enjoy the fishing as well.
“Its grown over the years, but we’d like to see it grow more,” said Bonnie Candelaria, part-owner of Groundhog Lake RV Park. “I know we’re a little bit away from Cortez, but it sure is a nice thing for the kids.”
The event provided lunch for the registered kids as well as prizes for a handful of different categories.
Abby Jarmon, 3, was the youngest participant with a catch after hooking a 2 lb.-6 ounce trout, Zethanarro Smith, 8, won the prize for the biggest fish in inches after reeling in a 16.75-inch trout and Cavyn Sanchez, 8, took home a prize for total weight of four fish at 3 lbs. and 9 ounces.
“Saturday was a bright, sunny day perfect for fishing and family fun,” Candelaria concluded. “Our young fishermen and gals were up bright and early and eager to get started.”
