The Montezuma-Cortez Panthers met up with the Bayfield Wolverines and Centauri Falcons on Saturday at Bayfield High School for a round-robin volleyball meet.
Opening against the Wolverines, the Lady Panthers were dropped 25-20, 25-16, 25-17. And then, facing the Falcons, the Panthers were swept again, 25-23, 25-14, 25-20.
M-CHS head coach Dave Robinson said that while it was a bummer to lose the first two league games of the season, he thought his squad played well against Bayfield.
He also said that it was a real test playing back-to-back games in the tri-format.
“The back-to-back games were tough,” he said via email. “They are tough to train for, both mentally and physically.”
“Our girls definitely hung in there with Bayfield and showed some toughness,” he continued. “Against Centauri we were a rollercoaster. We were able to put together points, but just couldn’t put the nail in the coffin.”
After all three teams played each other, Bayfield left with a 5-0 record (2-0 Intermountain League), Centauri finished at 5-1 (1-1 IML), and M-CHS dropped to 2-7 (0-2 IML).
The Lady Panthers will continue league play on Tuesday in an away contest against Pagosa Springs (7-1, 2-0 IML).
“We are looking forward to playing another tough league team in Pagosa,” said Robinson. “Those girls are well coached and are great hitters. We are going to match them with their intensity and effort and hope to come out with the W.”
