Solar home, business tour will showcase options

Oct. 8 tour will showcase variety of options for homes
Jim Hoffman installed hot water solar panels at his home at 525 Peaceful Drive to heat the water he uses. Other measures he employed in building his home have enabled him to get by without having to pay anything more than a connection fee for electricity.
Jim Hoffman said photovoltaic panel prices have dropped so much since he built his home, he would probably install more of them if he were building a house now.
Shaw Solar employees Allen Riling, left, Nathan Keil, center, and Evan Goldstrand install solar panels on a home north of Ignacio on County Road 316.

Take the solar tour

Solar home tour participants will be able to ask questions about installation and effectiveness, costs and the pros and cons of different options.
“We wanted to bring the solar tour back this year to focus more on community solar initiatives,” said Elsa Jagniecki, 4CORE program manager.
Funds from the tour benefit local 4CORE solar projects such as a soon-to-be completed solar array at Southwest Horizon Ranch that will eliminate costs to pump domestic water.
The tour is part of the American Solar Energy Society’s annual National Solar Tour, which attracted 150,000 participants across the nation last year. It is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct 8.
Tickets and a map of the tour route are available at www.fourcore.org. Tickets can also be purchased at Maria’s Bookshop at 960 Main Ave. and at the Oct. 8 Farmers Market at 259 West 9th St.
